RMAN-06091: no channel allocated for maintenance (of an appropriate type)


sometimes, when we issue commands in RMAN we may receive following error

RMAN> run
{
allocate channel c1 device type disk;
delete noprompt obsolete;
}

released channel: c1
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-03002: failure of crosscheck command at 04/23/2012 18:51:28
RMAN-06091: no channel allocated for maintenance (of an appropriate type)

Cause:
This is due to command use above is the oracle 10g command and we are using on oracle 9i. If we used above command in 10g it will work but in oracle 9i it will not work.

The solution is use the below below command in oracle 91

RMAN> run
{
allocate channel for maintenance device type disk;
delete noprompt obsolete;
}

allocated channel: ORA_DISK_1
channel ORA_DISK_1: sid=28 devtype=DISK
Deleting the following obsolete backups and copies:
